Walford

A four and a three quarter mile walk with a “no stile” option from Walford to Ross-on-Wye via fields and lanes.

Detail of Ross
  1. Leave Walford Church and walk on the B4234 towards Ross for about 100yds, cross the road by the letterbox and take the footpath by the bus stop. Turn right at the lane and continue past Daycroft Farm. When the lane bends to the right, take the path on the left between two gates.
  2. At the top of the slope, turn left onto the track. Follow it through the woods along the edge of the hill till you come to a lane. Turn left onto the lane and follow it to the main road.
  3. At the junction, turn left and after 50yds take the footpath on your right across the field. At the houses, turn left and continue to follow the path across Coughton Marsh and keeping the strawberries on your right, continue to the road.
  4. Turn right and then left after 100 yards by an open barn. At the next junction turn right. After about 500 yds you will see Hom Green Chapel (privately owned) on your right.
  5. In order to continue without crossing any stiles, you need to continue along the lane for one mile. Turn left into Cleeve Lane and at the end take the footpath to the right. When you reach a crossroads of footpaths you will see steps on your left where the other route joins up again at No 8.
  6. To take the alternative route, go past the chapel and on your left you will see the Homme. Take the path by the cattle grid and walk up the avenue. The path is clearly marked at the end, taking you to the right and along a concrete road past strawberries. Follow the signs until you reach a stile. Continue through the Cubberley estate, keeping to the path.
  7. Eventually you will cross a stile into a field which you cross diagonally. You will see a path to your left and one straight on which you take. Ignore the concrete roads to the Sewage Works! The path leads along the edge of a field with views towards Chase Hill and the town. Go down the steps at the end to join the alternative route.
  8. Go up the steps opposite (on your right if you have come from Cleeve Lane) and follow the path along the edge of the field, past a nursery school and primary school playing fields.
  9. At the churchyard follow the path and turn left when you see John Kyrle’s Gateway. Go through the gate into the Prospect, check out the view and continue to the church.

St Michael & All Angels, Walford

A beautiful 12th century church that has been sensitively transformed to encapsulate all that is good from the past with the needs of today’s wider community.

With a claim to be the oldest church in Herefordshire, it has a long history of ministering to the needs of a small but steadily thriving village community. Before Norman times the mud and wattle building was dedicated to St. Leonard, a Saxon saint, but the name was changed at the restoration of the building in 1887.

The first structure of the church, built around 1100, was a simple rectangular building consisting of the present nave. From about 1230 – 1240 the north aisle was added together with the arcade of four pillars and arches. Soon afterwards the aisle was continued to form the north chapel.

By 1430 the church was in a sadly dilapidated condition. General repairs were undertaken and at the same time the south porch was constructed. In the sixteenth century a passage was also added connecting the tower to the main building through the north chapel. That concluded the work of the building as it now stands.

In October 2015 a Faculty was granted for internal re-ordering. This has allowed for the removal of the pews in the western half of the nave and installation of a kitchen and toilet as well as a raised open area at the rear of the nave.
